Watercolor Painting & Instruction
SUMMER DAZE is created in the studio environment after a small , 4 x 6 inch, on-location preliminary value plan is developed. Just behind this large sand berm lies Sacramento’s American River.
IF I WERE “Dictator For A Day,” I’d require every politician to do two years of actual military service and have at least a minor in an art course that covered the Elements and Principals of Design. Then, this country might have a real chance at CIVIL DISCOURSE. BTW, deferments for “bone spurs,” would not be allowed.
Now, back to the real world…
No preliminary planning for this non-objective painting. The watercolor is an example of what I call, The Three T’S: Transcription, Translation, and Transgression. This painting is an example of the latter. At this stage of my career, Vishal Civil Discourse is often a goal.
PARKWAY TWIST is a result of a great Sacramento, fall morning along the American River Parkway, not far from my studio. The preliminary, three-value plan is one of several sketches I did while enjoying a walk through the wooded area with my dog, Connor. Several days later, this value plan becomes the basis for a Wednesday-morning watercolor class demonstration .
MOUNTAIN SYMPHONY illustrates what might happen when using a “high risk” approach to creative painting. In this case, the end result is all “high gain.” No preliminary sketch, no preplanning on this one, which ends up as a favorite class demonstration.
