I signed up for 10 watercolor classes with Woody Hansen in Sacramento. I am now in my third set of classes. Painting with Woody’s guidance has become addictive. He is challenging, demanding, yet supportive. We work with abstract and non-representative art, which means each student learns to paint with their own eye, not copy someone else. […] Students develop their own style. Abstraction is not for everyone, but if you want to stretch yourself and learn to see in new ways, as I have learned, try one of Woody’s classes.

Brush icon  Just writing to tell you again how much I enjoyed your class. I learned so much as you explained and demonstrated so many different  art concepts.  I still have my notes and all the great handouts you provided, and think of them as I paint.  I do not think there are any other instructors out there who cover so much, so deeply, and all in just one session.  I highly recommend your class to anyone who wants to build a more solid foundation in their painting skills! Best wishes for a new session!- JW

I have greatly enjoyed Hansen’s watercolor classes. It has polished my understanding of art, especially watercolor, as well as helped me get some faith in my painting abilities … it has been a good journey with Hansen. He provides all the pieces of the information and guiding principles, but leaves it up to the artist to finally decide on what he/she wants to paint. Our painting styles are very different but I have found value in his classes, since the knowledge applies to all kinds of painting styles/topics/themes/subjects. He allows time for discussions and, the best part is the critique of students’ art pieces … these classes have dusted the cobwebs from my mind and I have been able to take to watercolor like a fish to water.   I hope to take his classes again in the future. Highly recommend that one goes for learning techniques…and the importance of composition and value. – SF

We all enjoyed your demo at Manzanar. I’m glad you stressed value and shape. I needed the reminder. I liked what you say in your flyer,,   ‘Blinded by the quest for the ideal, they fail to appreciate their own unique marks and the glory of watercolor left to its own devices.’ Well said, I’ve been preaching that for years. I think you expressed it clearly. I’ll  quote you in the future.   As for your critique of my watercolor, you were right on. I’ve managed to paint a much better watercolor on the other side of that paper. Hope to see you next year.

I also want to tell you how much I appreciate your generous efforts to guide and encourage your students.  The results are life changing. Sharing the Milford Zornes comments was a huge contribution to my experience.

I thought your demo and final  results were great Sunday. I had eyed the painting I purchased a couple of other times and decided to ‘gift” myself. I know we will enjoy it.

This past weekend I was in Chicago with Megan and my sister. We spent a morning at the Chicago Art Institute with the Impressionists and Picasso. It was one of the best museum visits I have had. The Institute has an extensive collection, well hung, and it was exciting to see so many familiar pieces in the original. But what made the visit especially good, was coming in with all I have learned from your class about composition and shape and color, how to look at a painting from different perspectives. It was interesting to see the progression of the paintings from realistic to very abstract.
